Breakdown of Costs and Returns

  1. Initial Cost
The initial investment is mainly determined by the size (number of panels) of your system, and any additional extras such as battery storage. Your system size will depend on your energy, roof orientation, and shading – all of which are covered during your survey.
  2. Ongoing Costs
Solar panels require very little maintenance. We recommend an annual service to remove dust, debris and bird droppings. Often a window cleaner will be able to provide this service.
  3. Annual Returns
One of the primary advantages of solar panels is their ability to substantially reduce electricity costs. They reduce the amount of electricity you buy from the grid and generate an income in the form of Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments (please see below).
  4. Long-Term Benefits
Over the 25-year lifespan of the panels, the economic advantages of solar panel installation grow increasingly attractive. Please refer to the following table for a breakdown of the expenses and gains associated with systems of various sizes.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Payments

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) was introduced in January 2020 to succeed the Feed-in Tariff. It allows homeowners to earn money by exporting excess electricity back to the grid. Eligibility critera:

  • You must have a smart meter.
  • You must own the generation unit (solar panels).
  • Your meter should record exported energy on a half-hourly basis.
  • Your installation must be MCS-certified.
  • You must not be receiving SEG payments from another provider.

Earnings from SEG payments depend on your electricity supplier and contract terms. According to the Energy Saving Trust, a typical 4kW solar panel system could generate approximately £400 per year.

What are the benefits of installing solar panels?

Save on Monthly Bills

By generating your own electricity, you'll rely less on energy from the grid, leading to substantial savings on your electricity bills. Over time, these savings will offset the initial cost of installation.

Export Back to the Grid

You can receive SEG payments by exporting surplus electricity back to the grid. This not only provides financial returns but also maximises the use of your solar energy production.

Protection From Price Rises

Solar panels shield you from future electricity price increases. By generating your own power, you become less affected by the fluctuating energy market.

Cut Carbon Footprint

Solar energy is clean and renewable, reducing your reliance on fossil fuels. By installing solar panels, you significantly reduce your household's carbon emissions.
